Tasting Columbia Gorge SB

Two countries have a renowned reputation when it comes to producing stylish Sauvignon Blanc: France and New Zealand. However, don't worry too much American folks; you also have the power to achieve greatness! Phelps Creek estate located in Columbia Gorge in Oregon has a remarkable example of a cool climate Sauvignon Blanc with dry, high acids, lemon, and vegetal notes. A super refreshing wine, simple, but it does the job.

Columbia Gorge area vineyards are located 60 miles east of Portland. The gorge runs along the Columbia River from Washington state to Oregon for over 15 miles. The first vineyards were already planted in the region in the late nineteenth century. The west side of the AVA has a more maritime climate with higher rainfalls and cooler temperatures. The more east you go, the more continental and desert like the environment is.

Phelps Creek Vineyards lay in the western hills of the Hood River Valley appellation and as a consequence benefit from the influence of the marine climate, which you can unmistakably identify in their Sauvignon Blanc which is a dry medium body wine with lemon and grass notes and high acids.
