September is California Wine Month!

Mis à jour : 31 août 2018

Ok. You have all year long to discover California wine country and its incredible diversity of wines. However, September is kind of unique, as it is harvest time; the time for winemakers and vine growers to finally pick up the fruits of a long and laborious year of work. A significant step into making the precious juices for which you are craving.

California wine is serious. The state counts for 81% of US wine production and is the fourth largest producer of wines in the world. There are 4,800 vintners and 5,900 growers in California. The Golden State has 138 Viticultural Areas stretching over 800 miles from the edge of Oregon to the Mexican border. It has been 250 years since California has entered the wine game. The Spanish missionaries are recorded to be the first to plant vines in California. A couple of decades later commercial viticulture started. Then, the California Gold Rush, responsible for bringing more and more people to California, was also principally responsible for increasing thirst of the state. A combination of demographics and geographic features lead to the establishment of the existing viticultural areas: the proximity to a market (large cities) and the proper land and favorable climate. Think Napa and Sonoma or the Bay area.

Nowadays, California wineries generate annually $114 billion and are responsible for the creation of 325,000 jobs in California and 786,000 jobs around the country (number collected fro the Wine Institute).

So if it is merely to enjoy outstanding wines or to honor California wines’ history or both, you should, without a doubt, celebrate this 14th edition of the California Wine Month highlighting 250 years of wine growing history, achievements, and innovations.

We know you now say to yourself: “Ok, I am in, but where to go, what’s going on to celebrate?” No worries we found the best arrangements for you. The Wine Institute, the organization representing 1,000 California producers, shared a couple of events you can go to celebrate beneath this article.
